Watercolor + Digital Illustration

Hello friends!

I wanted to share a fun experiment I've been playing around with this past week. I've been obsessed with watercolor painting, and came up with some lovely swatches of color using some new watercolor inks I picked up at Hobby Lobby.

Then I merged my watercolor swatches with digital illustration on my iPad with the Procreate app (LOVE this app for digital drawing).

I scanned my watercolor swatches and imported them into Procreate, and had LOTS of fun with some nature shapes...
I really love how the variations of color show through, and having the look of watercolor, but the control of drawing the motifs. The best of both worlds!

I'm thinking of creating a Skillshare class to teach this technique. It is SUPER fun, and the process is a bit like magic.

Happy Thursday friends!

I have a few new patterns to share with you today, and a great sale in my Society6 shop!

My Pattern Camp group has weekly challenges and the last two have been really fun and gotten me out of my comfortable box of typical motifs. The first was to create artwork inspired by Mexican folk art and this is what I came up with after some Pinterest searching for inspiration...

And this week's challenge is terrariums which were SUPER fun to draw...

Of course I'm a bit obsessed with these in real life too. Faux succulent lovers unite!

And speaking of patterns, all home decor products in my Society6 shop are 25% off and free shipping today!

Woohoo!!

Lovely Things

You guys. I'm feeling really blissed out after this weekend.

It has been a lovely mix of crazy big art dream time and super sweet and fun family time.

On Saturday morning, I enjoyed a bit of quiet coffee time before the rest of the house was up...

And then I welcomed a new friend into our house to film two drawing classes for me.

The classes will be online with Big Picture Classes, which is a subscription class site for the creative and crafty.

I'm OVER THE MOON about being invited to teach for them. I've been pinching myself over the entire thing.

And then when they said they were going to send their guy to film me?! Who's life is this?

I mean look at his awesome set up there right on my little art table.

I'm not gonna lie...I was SUPER anxious about this whole shebang.

But Joe, their videographer, was so sweet and encouraging and made the whole process SO much easier than I expected it to be.

AND we bonded over a mutual love for all things You've Got Mail. I mean...what are the odds? I told him that I have always secretly wanted to be Kathleen Kelly, who he said is the perfect mix of organized and whimsical. Yep...maybe that's why I want to be just like her.

I can't wait to share more about these classes with you once the teasers are up online and they are ready for registration. I hope you all love them!

Today we had a slow morning and I got in some pattern making time...

This week's challenge for my Pattern Camp group was Mexican folk art, so these are my take on folk art flowers. Had a lot of fun with these!

We also took the boys to see the new Captain Underpants movie. So funny and the perfect 9 year old boy movie. I had more fun watching the boys' faces as they reacted to the movie than watching the big screen!

This was certainly a weekend for my highlight reel, and I'm so thankful for the balance of exciting out-of-my-comfortable-box things and relaxing family time.

Nothing keeps you in check like some good poop jokes after your class filming debut! ;)

Hope you've had a wonderful weekend friends!

Painting Day

Hello friends and happy weekend!

I wanted to share some peeks at a new painting I started today...

I've been itching to paint for weeks now and this was so relaxing and fun. Today was one of those "do anything we want to" days and it was MUCH needed after celebrating my boys' 9th birthday yesterday with about 10 kiddos in our house. Whew!

This is going to be similar to my other cloud painting but with a moodier background which I'm loving. I can't wait to add a few more layers to this tomorrow! .

I recorded the process so far and shared it over on my YouTube channel if you want to watch here!

Around Here Lately

Hello friends!

How was your weekend? I thought it would be fun to pop in and share a little random update since I haven't done that in for.ever.

We had a really busy and productive weekend at our house. Turns out planning to have people over two weekends in a row turns Dan and I into little worker bees!

This coming Saturday is the boys' 9th birthday party (I KNOW...9?!) and the next weekend I have a new friend coming from out of town to help me with a super exciting art-related adventure, which I'll be sharing more about soon! (ACK!)

Sooo...we did a lot of cleaning, painting, purging, and a bit of decorating over the weekend to get the house ready.

I spent a bit of time in my little artsy corner of the house, hanging this fun wire shelf and printing some orders. And caught the light streaming in at just the right time...

And I cleaned out my boys' dresser, which turned into more than a few tears, and this photo of their first and latest pairs of shorts...

GOODNESS. They are getting SO big you guys!

And after about two months of being married to my new iPad, I pulled out my sketchbook, pencil and pens to work on a new piece!

I thought it would feel weird after not using them for so long, but it was like reuniting with old friends.

I'm really in love with how this piece turned out.

I even grabbed the star motifs from it to make a pattern...

I've been drawn to shades of pink and orange like crazy lately which is SO not like me...but maybe it is SO like the current me?

I heard a quote the other day that said something like "you aren't required to be the same person you were 5 years ago or even 5 minutes ago." Isn't that great? Permission to always be changing.

I am embracing that as I'm noticing lots of things about myself evolving over the past year, and allowing myself to change however much I darn want.

Consider this your permission to do the same!

Hope you have a fabulous week!

New Kit with Illustrated Faith

Happy Tuesday friends!

I'm super excited to share with you my newest printable kit with Illustrated Faith!

The theme for this kit is "sweet like honey" and I hope this verse and the kit I created with it speak to you like they did for me.

I've been working hard lately to focus on following the "golden rule" not only with how I treat others, but also with how I think about them (and about myself). It can be SO easy to let our minds and thoughts wander to negative places, and I truly believe our thoughts and energy can be felt by others.

So when it was time to pick a verse for this month's kit, this one rose to the surface rather quickly. It was also super fun to draw all things honey related to go with it!

Last night I dug through my scrapbooking supplies to find some washi tape, adhesive, and cardstock to put together a mini journal with the kit. It had been a long time since I crafted something like this, and to use images I created myself was surreal and really wonderful.

I love how this kit was created for bible journaling but can also be used in so many different ways.

This little journal is meant to be a place to write down sweet and kind words for yourself or a loved one.

It can be kept on your bedside table as a place to keep encouraging reminders, or given to your mom, sister, or friend as a place for them to do the same.

Or you can fill it with sweet words to give as a Mother's Day card. What a wonderful gift!

The kit has one page with journaling cards...

And another with margin covers, tabs, little hexies, and lots of other goodies!

Oh it all just puts a bit smile on my face!

Thanks for letting me share friends, and if you purchase the kit I would absolutely LOVE to see what you create with it!

New Printables!

Happy Tuesday friends!

How is your week going? The weather here in Indiana is GORGEOUS today and I'm soaking in the sunshine and spring blooms.

I have two new printables in my Etsy shop to tell you about today!

I was so excited about creating my bible journaling kit for Illustrated Faith that I dreamed up a few more for my Etsy shop...

These embellishments can be used for bible & art journaling, scrapbooking, or mixed media art. And the long embellishments make perfect bookmarks!

New Product + Encouragement for YOU!

Happy Wednesday friends!

I have some exciting news to share with you today...a new product launch!

So a little back story...if you can humor me for a minute. And I promise there is a reason for the story that I think will encourage you.

About a month ago I posted a new pattern on my Instagram...

A new Insta friend, Elaine, commented on the pattern that it would be lovely for bible journaling, and asked if I had a printable of it available.

How did she know that I've been wanting to start creating scrapbooking illustrations? It was like she read my mind.

When I saw that she works for Illustrated Faith, I sent her a direct message and asked if she had any tips on what types of items would be popular for bible journaling, since that is a completely new concept to me.

She replied with a few tips, but also an invitation to be the April guest designer for the Illustrated Faith digital shop!

Talk about an exciting invitation! And one that I didn't need much time to deliberate.

Umm, YES PLEASE!

Those who have followed me for a long time know that I used to be an obsessed scrapbooker which makes this new adventure all the more exciting. Creating my OWN scrapbooking embellishments?!

Holy.Cow.

Even though I don't scrapbook anymore, I've always had a huge thing for the patterned paper, the stickers...all of it.

Because Elaine loved my pattern so much, I took it as my starting cue for the collection, and went with a theme of hope and faith in things unseen, because that is a huge mantra for my life these days.

The kit includes a page of embellishments and another page with four journaling cards.

There are a few things I really love about it.

It is authentically me. The hand drawn images, the child-like feel, and the message of hope. It is all ME. I'm a ridiculously hopeful person and I also believe in the magic and mystery of what we can't see and how it brings together fantastically wonderful opportunities for us in this life.

This kit pulls together all of that into a sweet little printable you can buy for $4.50. I tell ya that is quite a deal, right? Right.

I'm just over the moon about it.

Right now I'm using one of the bible margin covers (the long skinny pieces) as a bookmark which is just perfect, especially for my new Anne Lamott book (all the heart eyes!)...

You can check out the lovely things Elaine did with the kit over on the Illustrated Faith blog. That girl is good!

Here is one of her images showing the embellishments close up. Gah they make my heart skip a beat!

And I'm super happy to share that I'll be doing another kit for them in May! I can't wait to see what comes together for the next one.

So the lesson in all of this?

Keep going.

Keep sharing.

Keep doing the things you love and the threads will connect together in the ways they are meant to.

Those things that you can't not do with your time? The ones that excite you so much that you stay up too late on a work night or wake up first thing in the morning thinking about?

Keep doing them! Even if you aren't sure where they might take you.

That's where the magic is.
